Privacy Policy
Effective October 29, 2026
Farstar ("we", "us") is a free daily word game. We collect as little as we can: there are no accounts, no email sign-up, no ads and no tracking. This policy explains exactly what the game stores and why.
What we collect
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| A random player ID, created in your browser the first time you play. It isn't linked to your name, email or device. | To give you one round per night, keep your streak, and show your results. |
| Your answers each night, the time you played, and your eclipse pick. | To score the game. Rarity is based on how many players gave each answer. |
| The display name you choose, if you choose one. | To show on the leaderboard and on stars you discover. |
| Stars you name (the answer and your player ID) when your eclipse holds. | To show your name on that star. |
| Feedback you send, with the date. It isn't linked to your player ID. | To improve the game. |
| Daily totals of where visits came from (only the website's name, like "reddit.com", or that you used a challenge or group link) and of how often buttons like Share are pressed. These are just counts and aren't linked to you. | To see how the game is doing and how people find it. |
| Friend groups you create or join: the group's name and code, and which player IDs are in it. | To show group members each other's display names and distances. |
| Your IP address, briefly, while the server handles a request. | To stop spam and abuse with rate limits. The game keeps it in memory only and doesn't save it. |
We don't ask for your real name, email, phone number, location, contacts or payment details. Please don't put personal information in your display name or answers.
What stays in your browser
The game saves your player ID and your sound setting in your browser's local storage. It doesn't use cookies, and it doesn't use any analytics or advertising tools. Clearing your browser's site data removes these and starts you fresh.
Who else handles data
We don't sell, rent or share your information for advertising. A few services help run the game:
- Render hosts the game's server and database in the United States. Like any web host, it may keep short-term technical logs, such as IP addresses and request times, under its own privacy policy.
- Anthropic provides the Claude AI that checks answers and display names the game hasn't seen before. Only the answer or name text and the prompt are sent. Your player ID and IP address are not.
- Google Fonts delivers the game's fonts. When the page loads, your browser requests the fonts from Google, which receives your IP address and browser details under Google's privacy policy.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect the game and its players from fraud or abuse.
Answers are shared with other players
Answers are pooled into tonight's results: other players see which answers were given and how many people gave them, but not who gave them. Display names appear on the leaderboard, on stars you claim, and to members of groups you join, along with your distance each night. If you share a "beat my score" link, it contains your score, the night and your display name.
How long we keep it
Game records are kept while the game runs, so streaks, past nights and star credits keep working. You can delete your records at any time with the button below.
Delete your data
This deletes your display name, every round you've played, your group memberships and your star credits from our server. Stars you found stay in the game, but your name is removed from them. It also clears your player ID from this browser. This can't be undone.
If you've played in more than one browser, do this in each one. If you've lost access to a browser you played in, contact us and we'll help.
Children
Farstar is meant for players 13 and older, and we don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has played and saved a display name, contact us and we'll delete it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, including the European Union, the United Kingdom, California and other US states, you may have the right to access, correct or delete your information, or to object to how we use it. The delete button above handles deletion right away. For anything else, contact us. We'll answer within 30 days and won't treat you differently for asking.
We use your information because it's needed to run the game you chose to play (our legitimate interest in providing it). Our servers are in the United States, so if you play from elsewhere, your information is handled there.
Security
Connections to the game are encrypted, and the database is only reachable by the game's server. No system is perfectly secure, but because we store so little, there's very little that could be exposed.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If we start collecting something new, such as for ads, we'll say so on the game before it starts.
